Andy Rourke, former The Smiths bassist, died at 59.

Rourke became a member of The Smiths in 1982 and remained with the band until their disbandment in 1987, just before they were about to release their fourth studio album titled “Strangeways, Here We Come.”

Following the breakup of The Smiths, Rourke embarked on a lengthy music career, collaborating with Morrissey, the lead vocalist of The Smiths, on his solo projects. In addition to his work with Morrissey, Rourke lent his bass skills to various artists such as Sinéad O’Connor, The Pretenders, Badly Drawn Boy, and guitarist Aziz Ibrahim.

In 2005, Rourke ventured into the formation of a supergroup called Freebass, which included esteemed bassists Peter Hook (formerly of New Order and Joy Division) and Gary “Mani” Mounfield (known for his associations with The Stone Roses and Primal Scream).

Mat Osman, the bassist of Suede, expressed his admiration for Rourke, describing him as an exceptional musician with a distinct style that could be immediately recognized by listeners.
